A Special Day At A Special Place

Today was always going to be a highlight of the trip. This was a visit to the special Gallipoli Peninsular. A short ride today which was only interrupted by the traffic police pulling us all over for a licence check. He got through about 75% of the group before running out of notebook. So Aly got check and Adrian didn't. Again the value of an interpreter was immense as he was able to negotiate with police and tell us what was going on. Then it was a short trip to the peninsular. We visited a Turkish memorial first on the way to the peninsular. It was amazing to visit ANZAC Cove and realise what a bad decision it was to land and fight there. The topography for a force defending their country was perfect - steep and most impassible. For the attacking troops the task was nigh on impossible. The size of the task was huge. It was and amazing and serene place and it was great to visit it before the crowds arrive. The seating is already in place for the ceremony (I have heard it is there permanently now). Visits to Lone Pine (Australian Memorial), the main Turkish Memorial and Chunk Bair (New Zealand Memorial) followed. Then we had lunch on the waterfront followed by a trip across on the ferry to Canakkale, which is like a holiday down with an excellent waterfront and promenade.
